Book Talk with Glyn Ford
Despite recent attempts at ‘negotiation’, theattitudes of both Kim Jong-un’s regime and the West seem unchanged. North Koreais still shrouded in mystery, and there are no clear plans for the future…Can we trust either side to bring about peace? And if so, how?
This provocative insider’s account blasts apartthe myths which paint North Korea as a rogue state run by a mad leader.Informed by extraordinary access to the country’s leadership, Glyn Fordinvestigates the regime from the inside, providing game-changing insights, which Trump and his administration have failed to do. Acknowledging that NorthKorea is a deeply flawed and repressive state, he nonetheless shows thatsections of the leadership are desperate to modernise and end their isolation.
With chapters on recent developments includingthe Trump / Kim summit, Ford supports a dialogue between East and West, whilstalso criticising Trump’s facile attempts. Talkingto North Korea provides a road map for averting the looming threat of a warin North East Asia that would threaten the lives of millions.

About the Book
(Brecht’splay The Good Person of Sichuan
Brecht, Music and Culture- Hans Eisler inConversation with Hans Bunge.
The initiative behind the fourteen conversationswas Eisler’s wish to keep alive the memory of his great friend and colleague,Bertolt Brecht. But Eisler’s dynamic conversational range embraces far morethan his relationship with Germany’s greatest twentieth-century playwright. Hereflects on their exile from Nazi Germany in Los Angeles where they numberedamong their many friends and acquaintances Charlie Chaplin, Arnold Schoenbergand Thomas Mann. He also recalls their bruising encounters with the HouseCommittee on un-American Activities. Back in post-war Europe, he considers thequality of artistic, political and intellectual life in the German DemocraticRepublic; the social significance of music; and far broader philosophicalthemes concerning the future of the arts, artists and the lives of ordinarypeople.
About the Authors
Hanns Eisler, who was born in 1898 in Leipzig,is one of the most fascinating and controversial Austrian composers of theTwentieth Century. Committedly left-wing and enormously versatile, he composedin various genres: from chamber pieces in the style of the Schoenberg school to‘agitprop’ ballads and choruses for the Workers’ Movement; from full symphonicworks to the more conventional film scores he wrote for Hollywood. He alsocomposed the music to the National Anthem of the German Democratic Republic.
Hans Bunge was one of Bertolt Brecht’sassistants at the Berliner Ensemble and, after the playwright’s death in 1956Brecht’s widow, Helene Weigel, gave him the responsibility of creating theBrecht Archive.

Book talk: Cities in Science Fiction
Cities in Science Fiction
Copenhagen-Beijing
Please join us for this event, where we will explore the urban future from the vantage point of Copenhagen, one of the smallest capitals in the world, and Beijing, the great megacity.
The cities of the imagined future are often gigantic, glittering creatures, covering entire coastlines or even planets. They are floating on risen oceans, lie domed under the sea or deeply buried underground. In speculative fiction, many different types of narrative city structures keep reappearing – abandoned cities, feral suburbs, the city as a machine or a bazaar. A large portion of the Earth’s population already inhabit an urban world and share an urban future, and looking at the social and technological problems facing real cities today, even some of the most dystopic sci-fi scenarios do not seem farfetched anymore.
In his fiction, the Danish author, Kaspar Colling Nielsen, has laboured to build a 3,5 km high mountain for human habitation in a near future Denmark, a country with no skyscrapers of any significance (Mount Copenhagen, 2010). And he has unfolded a future, civil war in Copenhagen that takes place due to a collapse of the welfare system and greediness of the financial sector (The Danish Civil War 2018- 2024, 2013.) Colling Nielsen is celebrated as one of the most original voices in contemporary Danish fiction and has a style characterized by imaginative and tragicomic tales about life’s existential conditions and dilemmas. In this discussion, we will cover important topics as how to mitigate the complex physical and mental living environments in modern cities and literature’s role in shaping and visualizing better futures for all.
Kaspar Colling Nielsen (b. 1974). Born and raised in Copenhagen. Alongside his writing, Colling Nielsen works as a lecturer at Copenhagen Business School and as a screenwriter for film and television. He holds a degree in Business Administration and often participates in public discussions on socio-economic matters. He has a long standing interest in China.

34 Years Among the Birds of China: New Species and New Threats
Prof. Per Alstrom is a world-renowned ornithologist at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Uppsala University, and the SwedishSpecies Information Center of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. A prolific author and editor, Alstrom also has close ties to several scientific institutions in China and neighboring countries.
He writes: “I’ve travelled extensively across China since 1984, many times to places where the locals had never seen a Westerner before. The main aim of these trips has been to study birds, in the beginning just for pleasure (birdwatching), later for scientific research in collaboration with Chinese colleagues (still a pleasure!). These excursions have led to the description of five bird species new to science, and to revised treatment of several subspecies to species status. Using photos, sound recordings and video clips, I’ll bring the audience along on some of these trips, to show a fraction of the incredible variety of birds, mammals, insects, plants, cultures and sceneries found in China. I will also touch on the perceived changes and present threats to the Chinese avifauna.”
