One More Thing Before I Go: Meet John Cobb Jr.
One More Thing Before I Go:
Re-examine the reduction of organisms to machines that costs the earth
— Meet with John Cobb Jr.
The preeminent scholar in the field of processphilosophy and processtheology, author of more than fifty books, John Cobb Jr. was elected the to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014.
A unifying theme of Cobb’s work is his emphasis on ecological interdependence—the idea that every part of the ecosystem is reliant on all the other parts. Cobb has argued that humanity’s most urgent task is to preserve the world on which it lives and depends, an idea which his primary influence—philosopher and mathematician Alfred North Whitehead—describes as “world-loyalty.”
Cobb is well known for his transdisciplinary approach, integrating insights from many different areas of study and bringing different specialized disciplines into fruitful communication. Because of his broad-minded interest and approach, Cobb has been influential in a wide range of disciplines, including theology, ecology, economics, biology and social ethics.
“One More Thing Before I Go”
“I have two of the most beautiful, intelligent, and lovable great-grandchildren in the world. At 89 years of age, I know I won’t have the chance to see them much longer.
What saddens me is that I’m not leaving them a world nearly as hospitable as the oneI was born into, or with such promising prospects.
I realize that we have already passed the point where changes in our behavior will prevent extensive decay. Now it is just a matter of how bad it will be. But “how bad” is still a very important matter. It is too late to prevent extensive suffering. But it is not too late to make some difference.
I am convinced that we won’t change direction until we change the way we think. We can’t solve the problems of environmental and social decay while employing the very ideas that have caused it.
The ideas that still underlie much of our thinking stem from the view of nature developed in the seventeenth century. The great thinkers of that time took the Strasbourg clock as their model for understanding the natural world. Everything, it was thought, could be explained in terms of machine parts.
Toward this end, I’m organizing with others the largest transdisciplinary conference ever held on behalf of the planet. We’re bringing together more than 700 presenters to discuss some 80 different topics, all focused on the foundations needed for a civilization radically different than what we’re living in – an ecological one”.

The Good Girl of Chinatown: Book Talk with Author Jenevieve Chang
‘Jenevieve Chang is a natural storyteller, and her absorbing, bittersweet story – spanning China, Britain and Australia – about the difficult dances of family, marriage and identity, is told with grace, precision and unmatched elegance.’ Benjamin Law
Raised to be a ‘good girl’ in the claustrophobia of suburban Sydney, Jenevieve Chang has been running away for as long as she can remember. First from a childhood of demands and discipline, then a theatre world offering too few roles for Asian women; Jenevieve escapes to London and discovers its flourishing burlesque scene. Running then from her husband’s family, she lands in Shanghai where the ghosts of ancestors past loom large, forcing her to question how her family’s history of persecution and flight influences her search for identity and home
Join us for a special cabaret-style author talk – with a storytelling performance inspired by Jenevieve’s book, The Good Girl of Chinatown.
Jenevieve Chang is a writer, performing artist and movement director with a career spanning Australia, the UK and China. She trained at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. In Australia, she has worked with Sidetrack Performance Group, Urban Theatre Projects, Legs on the Wall as well as Yellow Earth Theatre, the Young Vic and the National Theatre in the UK.
Between 2008-2011, Jenevieve lived and worked in Shanghai where she became part of China’s first Vaudeville, Variety and Burlesque club.
Returning to Australia, Jenevieve has worked at the National Institute of Dramatic Art and performed in Stories Then and Now, presented by Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP). Most recently, Jenevieve starred in Monkey Baa Theatre’s The Peasant Prince, the award-winning stage adaptation of Mao’s Last Dancer.

Comedy Night – Ahmed Ahmed
ABOUT AHMED AHMED
Egyptian-American actor, comedian, producer, and director Ahmed Ahmed is one of the most diverse, multi-faceted talents in the entertainment industry today. In 2014, he can be seen starring as “Ahmed” on TBS’ hit comedy series Sullivan & Son. Executive Produced by Vince Vaughn, the show follows Steve Sullivan [Steve Byrne], a corporate lawyer who surprises his parents when he leaves his job to take over a bar owned by his father in Pittsburgh. Ahmed made his first appearance as unlucky in love, tow-truck driver [and best friend to Steve] “Ahmed” in season one, and joined the cast as a series regular in season two, quickly becoming a fan favorite. Ahmed is currently the only Arab-American actor playing a non-stereotypical role on a comedy sitcom, today.
Born in Helwan, Egypt and raised in Riverside, California Ahmed immigrated to the US when he was one month old with his family. When he was 19 years old he made the move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, and attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. His first big break was in the suspense, action film Executive Decision alongside Kurt Russell, Steven Segal, and Halle Berry in 1996. Ahmed went on to appear in a handful of blockbuster and cult hit features including Swingers, Iron Man, and You Don’t Mess With The Zohan. On the television front, Ahmed has appeared on top series such as Tracy Takes On, Weeds, and Roseanne to name a few.
In 2011, Ahmed made his directorial debut with his groundbreaking documentary Just Like Us. The film premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, and went on to be selected at 30 international film festivals, winning several “Best Director” and “Best Documentary” awards. The documentary, a celebration of culture and comedy, follows Ahmed and ten American comedians through Dubai, Egypt, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia, performing in front of over 20,000 Arabs and Muslims across the region. Just Like Us garnered Ahmed attention on the political front, and he was invited to The White House to have dinner with President Obama, and was also invited to The State Department to have dinner with Hilary Clinton- as they commended him on creating a project that made an effort to break down barriers and encourage cross-cultural dialogue. Ahmed is currently in post-production on Just Like Us Too, which takes place in Syria, Jordan, Palestine, and Oman.
While working in film and television Ahmed’s profile in comedy continues to rise, being hand picked by Vince Vaughn for his Wild West Comedy Tour [2005-present]. Vaughn is currently producing the first ever Wild West comedy festival in Nashville, TN where Ahmed will hold the roll of Comedy Ambassador, performing and hosting shows. In 2005, Ahmed cofounded and performed in the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour which aired on Comedy Central as the first ever Middle Eastern stand up comedy special. Ahmed is also the winner of the first annual Richard Pryor Award for Ethnic Comedy at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in Scotland.
Ahmed is currently a paid regular performer at the world famous Comedy Story in Hollywood, The Laugh Factory, and the Comedy Cellar in New York City. Treasures of the Steppe and Ancient Warrior Nomads
For more than six years the young archaeologist Dr. Gino Caspari has been working in remote landscapes of Central Asia in search of the traces of an enigmatic ancient culture. The Scythians, nomadic horse lords and fearsome warriors, ruled the steppe more than 2500 years ago. They did not leave written sources behind and therefore archaeology is the only way to understand how they lived, fought, and died. Today, the places which once were thriving cultural centers of nomadic tribes have yet again become inaccessible wilderness. Few things remain but the tombs in which those people were buried. And that is where the treasures lie!
