Summary of the talk:

The talk will focus on both the benefits and challenges of using this method of repeat photography to document Beijing’s transformations.

The Silver Way: Peter Gordon & Juan José Morales
In the 16th century, long before London and New York rose to international prominence, a trading route was discovered between Spanish America and China that ushered in a new era of globalisation. The ‘Ruta de la Plata’ or ‘Silver Way’ catalysed economic and cultural exchange, built the foundations for the first global currency and led to the rise of the first ‘world city’ – Mexico city. Peter Gordon and Juan José Morales question the conventional narrative about globalisation, discuss whether the past could teach us more about China today and suggest a paradigm analogous to that of the Silk Road, which underpins China’s burgeoning involvement in Spanish America today.
Peter Gordon is the founder and editor of the Asian Review of Books. He is also a publisher at Chameleon Press and was the driving force behind the Hong Kong International Literary Festival, the Man Asian Literary Prize and Hong Kong-based online bookseller Paddyfield.com.
Juan José Morales is a regular commentator on Asian art and history, and a frequent contributor to regional and international publications. A lawyer by training, he is a former president of the Spanish Chamber of commerce in Hong Kong.

His scores, which match the highest production values with a continual desire to discover new colours and sounds, are continuously in high demand. He is probably best known for scoring the hugely successful flagship ITV/NBC/PBS/Carnival Films drama, Downton Abbey, for which he has received two Primetime Emmy Awards, in 2012 and 2013 and a further nomination in 2014, as well as a BAFTA nomination in 2012.

Writing across cultures – Radhika Jha
Radhika Jha is the author of four critically acclaimed books.
Her debut novel, Smell, won the French Prix Guerlain
and has been translated into 24 languages.
Radhika will be in conversation with Laurie O’Donnell, Managing Director of Cornerstone International Group
“How can wanting to be happy be wrong?”
“Do you believe in God? I am sure you don’t. I am not sure I do either. But if there is such a thing as God, that God must be an old woman with wrinkled hands. Yes, wrinkled hands because she spends her day washing dirty souls.”
Radhika Jha, is a writer and a dancer. Her latest book, My Beautiful Shadow, is an intimate social commentary on entrapment and solitude. And a commentary on the feminine condition.
The voice is Japanese. Kayo, the protagonist, is a young Tokyo housewife and mother. Outwardly, she is no different from other young mothers, but her inner life is full of shadow or makkura, which means blackness in Japanese. Kayo has something that sets her apart. She belongs to an unspoken fraternity, a hidden club, which involves luxury, beautiful clothes and sensual skill. The club makes it possible for Kayo to escape the makkura. But it becomes an obsession, an addiction: ecstasy and suffering.
About the Author:
RADHIKA JHA, born in Delhi, has lived in many cities: Chicago, Paris, Tokyo and now Beijing. She studied anthropology at Amherst College, and did her Masters in Political Science at the University of Chicago. She writes and performs Odissi, the temple dance of Orissa. Book Talk with Val Wang
BEIJING BASTARD:
A book talk with Val Wang
Val Wang will present a book talk about her memoir Beijing Bastard, which details her experiences living in China from 1997 to 2002. The memoir takes readers into a disappearing Beijing, into the houses of Peking Opera performers, the ateliers of avant-garde artists and even into the doomed courtyard houses of Wang’s own extended family. The book tells the story of the city’s transformation in the years leading up to the city’s Olympic bid and of Wang’s own transformation in those years. The talk will focus on her process of converting lived experience in Beijing into literary material.
Val Wang is an author and multimedia storyteller interested in the intersection between the personal and the global. Evan Osnos has called her book Beijing Bastard “a memoir perfectly suited to the Beijing that she brings to life so well: heedless, pungent, and proudly insubordinate.” She has also directed and produced interactive and narrative documentaries as well as news and feature pieces for venues such as WGBH, WBUR, PBS and National Geographic. She now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts and teaches in the English and Media Studies Department of Bentley University, but her heart is still partly in Beijing.

THE FUTURE OF U.S.-CHINA RELATIONS
Five months into the Trump presidency, uncertainty continues to shroud the future of U.S.-China relations and American foreign policy in the Asia Pacific. Trade and North Korea’s nuclear program were expected to dominate the first U.S.-China Diplomatic and Security Dialogue between top government leaders, and policy watchers on both sides of the Pacific are looking for areas of cooperation.
To help shine a light on these issues and more, Young China Watchers is pleased to host former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel. Mr. Russel is an American diplomat who previously served as special assistant to the president and national security staff senior director for Asian Affairs

Melancholy Baby- Music Duo
Sanli is an experimental trio combining vocals, electronics, and yangqin. Laila Smith, Ben
Wetherfield, and Reylon Yount come from three distinct musical upbringings – jazz,
contemporary classical, and traditional Chinese, respectively. Together, they use their
arty-alternative sound to explore their bicultural identities. The three friends met at Harvard
College, where they formed an improvising collective that has performed throughout the Boston area. Individually, they’ve toured internationally with various ensembles and garnered many maccolades: Reylon has performed with Yo-Yo Ma’s GRAMMY Award-winning Silk Road Ensemble, Ben was named BBC Young Composer of the Year and had his work performed on Radio 3, and Laila was a Presidential Scholar in the Arts and performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. This time Laila and Ben will perform their music as Melancholy Baby in many places of China and Japan.
