Brecht, Music and Culture: read and performed by Sabine Berendse and Paul Clements
The performance will take the audience back to the East Berlin of 1958 when Hans Bunge, Bertolt Brecht’s assistant at the Berliner Ensemble and later Manager of the Brecht Archive, began the first of his fourteen recorded interviews with Brecht’s best friend and collaborator, the composer, Hanns Eisler.
Sabine Berendse, the daughter of the late Hans Bunge, together with Paul Clements have translated the conversations from the German and created a dramatic reconstruction of extracts from the conversations. A selection of recordings of Eisler’s music and rarely seen photographic images of Eisler and others illustrate the show.
In these conversations Eisler offers a compelling and absorbing account of his and Brecht’s close friendship and collaboration. He provides illuminating and original insights into Brecht’s work and ideas and gives an entertaining first-hand description of his friend’s personality and attitudes.
Sabine Berendse grew up in East Germany. She read Cultural Studies at Karl Marx University in Leipzig and studied for a Masters in Library and Information Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. A current resident of Cardiff, Wales, she works as Librarian and Information Specialist and freelance translator.
Paul Clements has taught, acted and directed in the UK, U.S., and Canada, Scandinavia. Paul was Artistic Director of the National Youth Theatre of Wales and, from 1985-1996, Director of Drama at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. From 1996 until his retirement in 2008 he was Principal of Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. In 2002 he was co-winner of The Blue Angel at the Berlin Film Festival for his work on the Danish film, Minor Mishaps, which won the award for Best European Film.
