The Bookworm Monthly Book Club: Death in the Andes
The Bookworm Book Club meets every month to discuss exciting works of literature from both modern authors and classic masters! For the past two years, the Book Club has discussed many books with particular relevence to China, and while this will continue, future editions will also include a variety of works from international authors, looking at international stories.
In February we will discuss a modern classic from Peru. Death in the Andes (Lituma en los Andes) is a 1993 novel by the Nobel Prize-winning Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa. It follows the character Lituma, from Who Killed Palomino Molero?, after being transferred to the rural town of Naccos.
This novel examines the tactics and motivations of the Shining Path, (a group of Peruvian communists aligned with Maoism) but situates their violence in the context of an older world where life is brutal and in a society which is on the very fringe of the modern world. A lot of magic realism is employed, with a great deal of references to old, “indian” spirituality, and to Pishtacos, vampires of Andean folklore.
The book is available at the Bookworm. Book Club members will receive 1 free drink with purchase of the book on the night of the Book Club.

China and Trumponomics: Navigating the New Abnormal, with James McGregor
Little wonder we’re confused about how Donald Trump will do business with China. Recently the new U.S. President had an unexpectedly “cordial” telephone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and committed to honoring the “One China policy” involving Taiwan. That’s quite a reversal, after Trump earlier accused Beijing of manipulating its currency and “raping” American business, and threatened to use the “One China” protocols as leverage in trade negotiations with Chinese officials. In this RASBJ presentation, veteran business consultant, commentator and author James McGregor — freshly returned from a trip to Washington D.C. — will offer his views on the “new abnormal” in Sino-U.S. trade and business relations.
James McGregor is Greater China Chairman for APCO Worldwide and author of two highly regarded books: No Ancient Wisdom, No Followers: The Challenges of Chinese Authoritarian Capitalism, and One Billion Customers: Lessons from the Front Lines of Doing Business in China. He is a former China bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal and former CEO of Dow Jones China. In his nearly three decades in China, he has also been a venture capital investor, entrepreneur who founded a research company for hedge funds, and an advisor to many multinationals and start-up companies. McGregor is currently a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Asia Society Global Council and National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.

LA Time’s Jonathan Kaiman on the China-Africa relationship
Jonathan Kaiman, Beijing bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, recently spent a month in Africa reporting on China’s deepening influence across the continent. In Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti, he found that Africans’ enthusiasm for the country, once sustained by waves of easy money, is beginning to wane; that they’re beginning to see the drawbacks of dealing so closely with the world’s newest superpower, one incalculably different from the retrenching West. Come hear Jonathan’s rare insights into the changing face of the China-Africa relationship, with stories from Djiboutian-Chinese restaurants, Ethiopian factories, rural Ghanaian gambling halls, and much, much more.
The talk will be moderated by the BBC’s Beijing Correspondent and FCCC vice-president, John Sudworth.
