Announcing: Sazerac Company Whiskey Tasting (4 for 160 RMB!)

20091028-whiskey-istock

The good folks of Sazerac Company, which owns a number of North American Distilleries, are bringing a taste of Kentucky to The Bookworm, Beijing. On Sunday, June 12 at 6 pm on The Bookworm’s rooftop, Arthur Pottenger of DXCEL, which distributes Sazerac products in China, will guide us through a four-whiskey tasting for only 160 RMB. Space is limited, so reservation is required via [email protected].

UPDATE: See our Q-and-A with Pottenger here.

The four whiskeys:

McAfee’s Benchmark No. 8 Straight Bourbon, aka Benchmark, is a smooth, well-rounded whiskey great for sipping or use in cocktails. We’ll start with this to prepare your palette for these next few knockouts…

Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon, the namesake of the Buffalo Trace Distillery, is a wonderfully rich, pleasantly sweet bourbon that retains its character even in mixed drinks. We’ll be trying this neat, but order an Old Fashioned the old-fashioned way — no fruit! — and you’ll see what we mean. Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible declared this “one of the world’s great whiskies.”

Eagle Rare 10 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, aged 10 years, as its name implies. Bold, oaky flavors are obvious, but stick around for the chocolate, almonds, and toffee. Eagle Rare is the only bourbon to win double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition five times.

1792 Ridgemont Reserve, distilled at the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, is made with a signature “high rye” recipe and aged in multiple barrels. Pottenger, who will lead us through the tasting, will explain what this means, but for now all you need to know is this drink is spicy, sweet, and smooth.

Again, the above four whiskeys can be sampled for only 160 RMB. You won’t likely find a better deal in town. Reservation is required. Please email [email protected].
