Hacking Immortality: The Science and Science Fiction of Extreme Human Life Extension
Background: After four billion years of existence, our species is on the verge of taking active control of our evolution. The genetic revolution will challenge our traditional notions of nature and alter many aspects of what it means to be human including the way we make babies, the nature of the babies we make, and the span of our lives. Noted futurist and science fiction author Jamie Metzl will join Bookworm on July 20 to discuss the very real science of extreme human life extension and his new novel, Eternal Sonata. Ray Kurzweil calls the book “a brilliant exploration of the many challenges and opportunities our species will face as the exponential growth of real-world technology moves us toward immortality.”
Bio: Jamie Metzl is a Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Council, novelist, blogger, syndicated columnist, media commentator, and expert in international affairs and biotechnology policy. He previously served as Executive Vice-President of the Asia Society, Deputy Staff Director of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senior Coordinator for International Public Information at the U.S. State Department, Director for Multilateral Affairs on the National Security Council, and as a Human Rights Officer for the United Nations in Cambodia and was a partner in a global private equity firm. Jamie appears regularly on national and international media and his syndicated columns and other writing on international affairs, genetics, virtual reality, and other topics are featured in publications around the world. He is the author of an Asian history book and the novels The Depths of the Sea , Genesis Code, and Eternal Sonata, holds a Ph.D. from Oxford, a JD from Harvard Law School, and is a graduate of Brown University.
