Bookworm Comedy Night This Sunday

You already know Glenn Wool is headlining Sunday’s edition of Bookworm Comedy Night, but we’ve lined up a great opening act, too. Kemin Zhang, musician/magician, has hung out with some comedic greats during his time in New York, and he’ll be doing his classic 10-minute set this Sunday.

Zhang, born to a musical family in China, had already become a regular at comedy clubs such as Yuk Yuk’s and The Laff Resort in Toronto by age 19. He then went on to appear on television as a magician, performing in CCTV’s Chinese New Year miniseries Happy Hero: Magic Training Camp. He has worked on some original Chinese musicals such as Love U, Teresa! and a magical musical of his own creation, Joker’s Game, which was awarded “Best Production Award” and “Best Loved By Audience Award” at the China National Dongguan Musical Theatre Festival in 2011. (And the New York Times wrote about it: “With its catchy choral numbers, poignant ballads, eye-popping magic tricks, standout choreography, and stunning sets, ‘Joker’s Game’ has all the makings of a hit.”)

The night will be hosted by Paul Johnson, a frequent headliner at the Kung Fu Komedy club. He writes the Inside Job column for Time Out Shanghai.
