The Bookworm 10th Anniversary Week

The Bookworm is turning 10 years old! We think a celebration is called for — an eight-day celebration, to be exact, beginning Saturday, September 19, featuring a flea market, game show, book talk, journalism discussion, community get-together, whisky tasting, and keynote addresses, culminating in a party with live music on Saturday, September 26. Of course there will be drink deals all week, and keep an eye on this space for chances to win free tickets.

We will also be giving away tickets on Twitter @BeijingBookworm and Facebook, so follow us there!

Saturday, Sept 19

Noon to 7 pm: Beijing Flea Market, presented by THRIFT; 20+ vendors with handicrafts, food, clothing, books, jewelry, etc (free to browse)

8 pm: China 10 Game Show, hosted by Kaiser Kuo: a Jeopardy!-like show pitting four foreign correspondents (Ian Johnson, Ben Blanchard, Lucy Horby, Anthony Kuhn) against one another to see who knows China best. Winner takes home a J visa! (50 RMB, 40 RMB members)

9:30 pm: Live music from the lovely Jordan Darling (FREE)

Sunday, Sept 20

Noon to 5 pm: Farm to Neighbors farmers’ market on our rooftop: grass-fed meats, fresh veggies, pasture-raised chicken, organic honey, fresh-baked bread, and so much more. Come discover how healthy and delicious food can really be! (Free to browse)

8 pm: Bookworm Comedy Night, headlined by Wil Sylvince (former Chappelle’s Show writer, MC of New York’s famous Comedy Cellar, and two-time headliner at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival); Storm Xu, who has been called “the future of comedy in China,” will host, with an opening act by Beijing’s own Paul Creasy (150 RMB presale, 180 RMB at door)

Monday, Sept 21

7:30 pm: Book talk with James Bradley (Flags of Our FathersFlyboys, etc); he will be talking about his latest book, The China Mirage (50 RMB, 40 RMB members)

Tuesday, Sept 22

7 pm: Community Poetry, a showcase of poets in Beijing (FREE)

8 pm: Storytelling (theme: China 10) (FREE)

Wednesday, Sept 23

8 pm: Live recording of the Sinica podcast, hosted by Kaiser Kuo and David Moser… and a very special guest that longtime listeners of Sinica will be more than familiar with (50 RMB, 40 RMB members)

Thursday, Sept 24

8 pm: China Journalism Panel, with reporters who have 10-plus years of China experience: Melinda Liu moderates, featuring Charles Hutzler, Laura Daverio, and Yosuke Watanabe (50 RMB, 40 RMB members)

Friday, Sept 25
